The concept for Grand Central was to create a neighborhood village style shopping center anchored by a grocery store to serve the local neighborhood and the greater Vancouver and Portland areas. The village is a lively community gathering area, with an exciting mix of shops and restaurants, space for outdoor entertainment, fine and café style dining, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the whimsical wind sculptures that augment the landscape and frame views of Mount Hood.
Designed by Tiland Schmidt Architects, the theme is intended to evoke the site’s industrial past, with industrial imagery rendered in a modern manner. Substantial concrete columns and beams, tumbled brick, black steel accents, and copper wrapped barrels comprise a rich pallet of materials that harkens back to images of old warehouses and industrial buildings.Wood walls and canopies, decorative lighting, sidewalk pavers and scoring patters, landscaping, and street furniture bring comforting warmth and scale to the pedestrian areas.
